Stop Playing Small
Are you a crocheter or knitter who has been playing it small? I know that feeling, and I’m here to tell you that sometimes, pushing yourself just a little can make all the difference. I’m not here to convince you to do something you don’t want to do or sell you a program—I just want to encourage you to take action if there’s something more you’ve been wanting to do in your fiber arts journey.
With two months left in 2024, now is the perfect time to start thinking bigger and stepping outside your comfort zone. Whether it’s trying a new technique, launching a creative project, or simply making more time for your craft, there’s no better time than now.
Expanding Your Yarn Horizons
For me, pushing myself meant waking up a little earlier to film this video before work, knowing I’d be short on time later. It also meant exploring new aspects of yarn, like spinning my own and gathering supplies to start dyeing. These were things I never thought I’d do because I didn’t believe I was capable—but here I am, making them happen.
I’ve heard from many fellow fiber artists who are interested in stepping beyond their usual routines. Maybe you’re a knitter considering crochet, or you’re hesitating to try a new type of yarn, pattern, or technique. Often, we hold ourselves back out of fear—fear of failure, of not knowing enough, or of taking risks. But what if you pushed past that hesitation?
Financial Considerations and Smart Planning
Let’s be real—budgeting plays a role in all of this. I would never suggest spending beyond your means. Financial responsibility comes first, and I understand the frustration of investing in yarn only for it to disappoint. However, there are ways to explore new creative endeavors without overspending. Thoughtful planning and using the resources you already have can help you make progress without straining your budget.
The Perfect Time to Take Action
With the end of the year approaching, you have a built-in deadline to start researching, planning, and gathering materials. Sometimes, the biggest obstacle to progress is not setting a clear timeline. Researching can feel productive, but without actionable steps, it can turn into procrastination. Give yourself a timeframe: research for the next two months, and then start taking real action at the beginning of the new year.
As the weather cools (for most of us—sorry, Australian friends!), we naturally spend more time indoors. The darker evenings may lead to more screen time, but they can also be the perfect opportunity to focus on your craft and move forward with your creative goals.
What’s Your Next Step?
If you’re unsure about what to do next, start by writing it down. Sometimes, just putting your thoughts into words can make a goal feel more achievable. You can even drop your ideas in the comments—this is a supportive space where fellow yarn lovers can encourage and inspire each other.
For me, getting over the fear of judgment was a big hurdle. I had several videos sitting on my phone for months before I finally uploaded them to YouTube. But once I did, my life changed. I’ve connected with amazing people and expanded my skills in ways I never imagined.
If you already know what you want to do and you’re just waiting for a sign—consider this it! Start today. If you need a bit more time, use these last two months of the year to gather information and resources so that you’re ready to hit the ground running in January.
Make the Most of This Season
This time of year also presents opportunities to gather supplies affordably. If family or friends ask what you want for the holidays, consider asking for tools or materials to help you achieve your goals. Whether it’s a crochet hook, a yarn store gift card, or supplies for a new creative endeavor, these gifts can be a great way to set yourself up for success.
Ready to Think Big?
I know firsthand how rewarding it is to step outside your comfort zone and embrace new challenges. If something has been on your mind—whether it’s trying a new technique, starting a YarnTube channel, or working on a dream project—take this as your encouragement to go for it.
I can’t wait to hear what you’re working on now that you’re no longer playing it small. Drop a comment and let’s inspire each other to think bigger!
