What to Do Instead
Have you ever thought about giving away all your yarn and hooks and quitting crochet forever? If so, you’re not alone! Many of us have felt frustrated or unmotivated at times, and today, I want to talk about five completely valid reasons why you might want to quit crochet—and what you can do instead.
1. You Get Frustrated Too Easily
If every time you start a new project, you find yourself getting irritated or struggling with the pattern, it could mean that you’re tackling projects that are too advanced. It’s okay to take a step back! Working on smaller, simpler projects using basic stitches can help build your confidence and skills. Plus, completing projects quickly can give you a sense of accomplishment that keeps you motivated. And remember—there’s no harm in setting aside a tough project and coming back to it later!
2. You’re Bored with Your Crochet Projects
On the other hand, if you feel uninspired or unchallenged, it might be because your projects are too simple. Try pushing yourself with a more intricate pattern, a new stitch, or a different type of yarn. Experiment with finer yarns or smaller hooks to add variety and engagement. When you challenge yourself, you might rediscover the excitement that made you love crochet in the first place! Click HERE to try my favorite projects!
3. Crochet Hurts Your Hands
If crocheting causes hand pain, there are a few things you can try before giving up. First, consider the yarn and hook size you’re using—larger hooks and thicker yarns often require more effort, which can strain your hands. Switching to lighter yarn and ergonomic hooks may help reduce discomfort. If you crochet frequently, be mindful of taking breaks, stretching your hands, and maintaining good posture to prevent strain. Click HERE for my favorite hooks.
4. Someone Told You It’s an “Old Person’s Hobby”
There’s a stereotype that crochet is only for older generations, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! There are plenty of young crocheters making trendy, modern designs. If traditional patterns don’t inspire you, look up crochet influencers, Instagram accounts, or YouTube channels run by younger creators. You’ll find fresh, stylish projects that prove crochet is for everyone, no matter their age!
5. You Feel Like You’re the Only One Who Crochets
If no one in your immediate circle shares your love for crochet, it can feel isolating. But the good news is that there’s a whole world of crocheters online! Join Facebook groups, browse Reddit threads, or follow crochet designers on Instagram. Find me on Instagram HERE. Engaging in these communities can introduce you to like-minded people who share your passion.
Should You Really Quit Crochet?
If you’ve tried adjusting your approach and still feel uninterested, it’s okay to take a break. Store your supplies somewhere out of sight so they don’t make you feel guilty, and explore other hobbies. If, after a long break, you still have no desire to crochet, consider donating your yarn to a local charity, thrift store, or crafting group that could use it.
At the end of the day, hobbies should bring joy. Whether you decide to keep crocheting or move on, do what makes you happiest. And if you ever decide to pick up your hooks again, the crochet community will always be here to welcome you back!
