Perfect Border for Your Blanket
Recently, one of my older YouTube Shorts started gaining a lot of attention. It featured a beautiful crochet border, but I didn’t go into much detail about it in the short. Since many viewers found it through searches for crochet borders, I wanted to take a moment to discuss it in more depth.
The Inspiration Behind the Border
The border I used in that video comes from the YouTube channel Hectanooga1, created by Emmy. She demonstrated the border on a small square, but I adapted it for my blanket. One key difference between my version and hers is that I used it on fleece rather than a crocheted piece. To prepare the fleece, I used a rotary cutter with a skip blade to create holes along the edge. Then, I worked a foundation row with Red Heart Super Saver yarn before adding the decorative border.
If you want to use this border on a non-fleece blanket, you can simply crochet a round of double crochets before starting the decorative edge.
My Favorite Blanket Border
One of my favorite blankets features a scallop border that complements the overall pattern beautifully. This particular blanket is made from ombré yarn, which gives it a soft, flowing color transition. The scallop border adds to the gentle aesthetic, making it feel cohesive rather than contrasting sharply.
I love how easy this border is—it’s a beginner-friendly option that looks more intricate than it really is. If you can do double crochet stitches and picots, you can definitely create this border.
Choosing the Right Border for Your Project
Selecting the perfect border depends on the style of the blanket. Here’s my thought process when deciding on a border:
Match the Aesthetic – A blanket with soft, wavy patterns benefits from a delicate, rounded border, whereas geometric patterns may look better with a structured or angular border.
Consider the Recipient – For a child’s blanket, a playful and whimsical border works well. For an adult, especially with more masculine themes, a simple, structured border may be more appropriate.
Use Complementary Colors – I typically avoid high-contrast borders, preferring colors that blend seamlessly into the main blanket design.
Think About Practicality – A border often gets the most wear and tear. Using a low-pill yarn or a slightly darker color can help keep it looking fresh longer.
Stick to the Same Yarn Type – This ensures the border and main blanket wash and wear at the same rate, preventing puckering or uneven shrinking.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right border can elevate your blanket from simple to stunning. Whether you’re working with fleece or a fully crocheted piece, selecting a border that complements the style, colors, and intended use of the blanket will result in a beautifully finished project.
