Avoid Burnout With These Tips

 Stay Inspired

We've all heard of "crochet burnout" or similar terms in the crafting community. Sometimes, despite our love for our craft, we feel uninspired, and it's hard to pick up our hooks, needles, or yarn. I’ve experienced this myself, particularly a few years ago when I was really sick and couldn’t crochet for weeks. It made me realize that sometimes we need a little push or fresh inspiration to reignite our creativity.

If you find yourself in a crafting rut, don’t worry! Here are some ways I’ve found helpful in staying inspired and motivated to keep creating—without relying on the temptation of just buying more yarn.

1. Be Mindful of Your Media Consumption

What we consume, especially on social media, can have a huge impact on our inspiration levels. I always try to be conscious of the content I engage with. Is it positive and inspiring, or just filler content? While scrolling through Instagram or YouTube, I focus on following accounts that spark creativity, even if they're not directly related to yarn crafting.

For example, I follow painting channels that demonstrate mixing paints. Watching how different colors blend can be a great way to find new color schemes for my crochet projects. Similarly, I enjoy watching leather tooling and cake decorating videos, where I’m inspired by the creativity and the way they bring beauty into the world. Seeing other creators work in different mediums helps me stay inspired, and I often find ideas that I can adapt into my own crochet or yarn-dying practices.

2. Surround Yourself with Creative People

As the saying goes, "you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." It’s important to connect with others who inspire and encourage you to create. While I don’t have many local friends who crochet or knit, I’ve found a wonderful community online. Engaging with other fiber artists—whether through YouTube or social media—keeps me motivated.

It doesn’t have to be other crocheters either. If you know someone who paints, sews, or even works in other creative fields, their passion can help reignite your own. Whether through attending craft fairs or just engaging with other creators online, the more you expose yourself to creative minds, the more likely you are to stay inspired.

3. Schedule Time for Creativity

One of the biggest obstacles to crafting is finding time. Between work, family, and life responsibilities, it can feel like there’s no time left to create. But if I don’t make time for it, it’s easy to fall into a rut. For me, scheduling specific times in the day to crochet or create has been key. For example, I reserve my mornings on my days off to work on projects before I get caught up in errands or other tasks.

It’s not always easy, especially with a busy schedule, but making time for your craft, even in small increments, can help keep your creativity flowing. If your schedule is packed, try sneaking in a few minutes during lunch breaks or while waiting for appointments. Having set time can make all the difference in staying inspired.

4. Be Prepared with Supplies

Having your supplies ready and accessible is another way to keep your creativity going. I’ve found that having several project bags, each with its own set of supplies, is really helpful. Whether I’m at home or on the go, I can grab a project bag, throw in my yarn or hooks, and be ready to create anytime inspiration strikes.

If you’re looking to explore new aspects of your craft, like yarn dyeing or spinning (which I’ve recently started!), it’s helpful to have the materials you need already on hand. This way, you can dive into new techniques without having to wait for supplies to arrive. Keep your creative tools organized and ready to go!

5. Expand Your Horizons

Sometimes, inspiration comes from unexpected places. I make it a point to expose myself to new styles and different age groups. Watching what younger or older generations are doing in crochet and yarn crafting has given me new perspectives. I’ve also been drawn to vintage patterns and old designs that have a different aesthetic from today’s trends. By stepping outside of your comfort zone and looking at both modern and vintage ideas, you can find hidden gems of inspiration that you might not have considered otherwise.

6. Push Yourself to Try New Things

Sometimes, the best way to reignite your inspiration is to push yourself beyond your usual routine. Trying new techniques or materials—like I did with yarn spinning—can open up new possibilities and keep your crafting journey exciting. You don’t have to dive into overly intricate or difficult projects, but just stepping outside of your comfort zone can bring a fresh spark to your creativity.

Incorporating new skills or materials into your crafting routine can push you to think about your projects in new ways. Whether it's learning a new crochet technique or experimenting with different types of yarn, trying something new can fuel your inspiration and keep you excited about your craft.

Final Thoughts

Staying inspired as a crafter isn’t always easy, but by being mindful of your surroundings, the media you consume, and your schedule, you can reignite your passion for crochet and yarn arts. Surround yourself with creative influences, make time for your craft, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. There’s so much out there to inspire you—so take advantage of it, and keep creating!

How I Modified A Hexagon Cardi for Mid & Plus Size

Hexagon Cardigan Modifications Hey yarn lovers! If you're a midsize or plus-size crocheter looking for ways to customize your hexagon cardigan for a more flattering and comfortable fit, I’ve got some great tips for you. I recently finished my second hexagon cardi and made a few modifications that helped me feel more confident wearing it. Here’s what I learned! The Inspiration Behind My Second Hexagon Cardi A while back, I made a basic hexagon cardigan using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. While I loved the pattern and even won a blue ribbon at my county fair, I wasn’t sure I would actually wear it. It felt a bit too boxy and oversized for my liking. This time, I decided to use Herrschners Witches Brew yarn for a fun Halloween-inspired version. Get the yarn HERE . Since I wanted to ensure I would love wearing it, I made a few tweaks to improve the fit and feel. Key Modifications for a Better Fit 1. Adjusting the Shoulder Fit Instead of making the panels overly large, I measured my sho...

All The Details On This Popular Crochet Border

Perfect Border for Your Blanket Recently, one of my older YouTube Shorts started gaining a lot of attention. It featured a beautiful crochet border, but I didn’t go into much detail about it in the short. Since many viewers found it through searches for crochet borders, I wanted to take a moment to discuss it in more depth. The Inspiration Behind the Border The border I used in that video comes from the YouTube channel Hectanooga1, created by Emmy. She demonstrated the border on a small square, but I adapted it for my blanket. One key difference between my version and hers is that I used it on fleece rather than a crocheted piece. To prepare the fleece, I used a rotary cutter with a skip blade to create holes along the edge. Then, I worked a foundation row with Red Heart Super Saver yarn before adding the decorative border. If you want to use this border on a non-fleece blanket, you can simply crochet a round of double crochets before starting the decorative edge. My Favorite Bla...
