Feel Satisfied With The Yarn You Have

Don't Feel Deprived

Have you ever told yourself you need to cut back on buying yarn? It’s a common dilemma for many of us, whether due to budgeting, upcoming holidays, or simply trying to manage our growing stash. But what if I told you there’s a way to do it without feeling restricted or deprived?

I recently heard a suggestion that completely changed my perspective. It wasn’t even related to yarn—it was about eating healthier! The idea was that instead of focusing on avoiding unhealthy foods, you focus on adding nutritious options to your meals. This shifts your mindset from deprivation to abundance. And I realized—this concept works perfectly for yarn shopping too!

The Problem with “Yarn Diets”

The moment we tell ourselves we can’t buy yarn, it often triggers a sense of scarcity. Thoughts like, What if I miss a sale? or What if I really need something? start creeping in, making the urge to shop even stronger. Instead of imposing strict no-buy rules, I found a way to reframe my thinking—and it’s been a game-changer.

Introducing the “Use First” Bin

A while back, I set up a “Use First” bin in my craft space. It’s a simple concept: I pulled out yarns from my stash that I love and want to use soon. I placed them in a clear tote right where I can see them as soon as I walk into my yarn room.

This small change made a huge difference! Instead of feeling like I need to dig through my closet (which can be overwhelming), I’m immediately greeted by beautiful yarns I’m excited about. It’s like coming home to a home-cooked meal instead of scrambling to figure out what to eat.

How It Works

  1. Pick Your Favorites – Go through your stash and pull out yarns that inspire you for the current season. Think of it like curating a collection!

  2. Make It Visible – Keep your chosen yarns somewhere you’ll see them regularly. A clear bin, basket, or designated shelf works great.

  3. No Pressure, Just Options – This isn’t about restricting yourself. It’s about making it easier to work with what you have before feeling the need to buy more.

  4. Rotate as Needed – When the seasons change or your project ideas shift, refresh your bin with new picks from your stash.

The Mindset Shift

Instead of focusing on not buying, I focus on the excitement of what I already have. When I see my “Use First” bin, I don’t feel the urge to browse online sales or run to the craft store. I see possibilities right in front of me!

Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t buy new yarn. If you love shopping for yarn and it fits your budget and space, go for it! But if you’re looking to cut back, this small adjustment might be the solution you need.

Would This Work for You?

Have you tried something similar? Do you think this approach could help you feel more satisfied with your current stash? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Drop a comment and let’s chat about it.

Hexagon Cardigan Modifications Hey yarn lovers! I recently finished my second hexagon cardi and made a few modifications that helped me feel more confident wearing it. Here’s what I learned! The Inspiration Behind My Second Hexagon Cardi A while back, I made a basic hexagon cardigan using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. While I loved the pattern and even won a blue ribbon at my county fair, I wasn’t sure I would actually wear it. It felt a bit too boxy and oversized for my liking. This time, I decided to use Herrschners Witches Brew yarn for a fun Halloween-inspired version. Get the yarn HERE . Since I wanted to ensure I would love wearing it, I made a few tweaks to improve the fit and feel. Key Modifications for a Better Fit 1.
