Top 5 Places to Buy Yarn Online

My Favs

If you've been following me for a while, you know that I strongly believe in only purchasing yarn with a purpose—whether that’s for a specific project or to build a well-thought-out stash. This list isn’t meant to encourage impulse shopping, but rather to provide a trusted resource when you’re ready to invest in quality yarn. Here are my top five favorite online yarn retailers and why I love them! (not in any order)

5. LionBrand.com

Lion Brand yarn is widely available in many stores, but I prefer ordering directly from their website. Here’s why:

  • They often offer double discounts—clearance items frequently have an additional percentage off.

  • Their website provides detailed color descriptions, which helps prevent surprises when ordering yarn based on color names alone.

  • They have an active social media presence, including Instagram Lives, where you can interact with their team and see upcoming releases.

4. KnitPicks and WeCrochet

I’m relatively new to Knit Picks, but I’m already a fan! Here’s why:

  • They offer investment-worthy yarn at a mid-tier price point. While I’m not at a stage where I can justify $30 hanks of yarn, Knit Picks provides high-quality wool blends at reasonable prices.

  • Their Chroma line is a personal favorite. It’s 70% superwash wool and 30% nylon, making it soft and durable.

  • The website is excellent at describing colors accurately, which is incredibly helpful when choosing color-changing yarns.

When I filmed this video, I said one downside is that I haven’t found a free shipping option yet, and my past orders had a $7 shipping fee. However, for the quality of the yarn and the accuracy of product descriptions, it’s a trade-off I’m willing to accept. But since then, I've gotten several free shipping or low cost shipping promos in emails. If you don't have a good promo and want to order anyway, the free shipping threshold is considerably less at We Crochet, even though they are two parts of the same store.

3. Wool Warehouse (UK-based)

Though Wool Warehouse is based in the UK, it’s an amazing resource for US buyers, and the shipping costs are surprisingly reasonable. Here’s why it’s a top choice:

  • Diverse selection—tons of yarn brands, weights, and fiber types, many of which aren’t commonly found in the U.S.

  • Affordable pricing—even with the currency conversion, my orders have been very budget-friendly.

  • Die lot selection—the site allows you to see and choose from available die lots, which is fantastic for consistency in large projects.

The only downside is that tracking isn’t as detailed as with U.S. retailers. However, I’ve never had an issue with delayed or lost packages, so it’s a minor inconvenience for such a great resource.

2. Herrschners.com

Herrschners is a longtime favorite of mine, mainly because of their private label yarns. They’ve done an incredible job of curating a variety of house-brand yarns, and the quality has significantly improved over the years. Here’s why I love shopping at Herrschners:

  • They offer exclusive yarn lines, including Herrschners Afghan Yarn, which comes in a huge range of colors and is a fantastic value.

  • Their worsted-weight collections—Worsted 3, Worsted 8, and Worsted 12—offer different sizes at great prices, and the texture has improved tremendously compared to older versions.

  • They frequently have clearance sales on both their private label yarns and well-known brands like Caron and Universal Yarn.

  • They also carry Willow Yarns, which leans more high-end with wool blends, and both brands can be ordered together from the same site.

One thing to note is that Herrschners sends frequent promotional emails, sometimes multiple times a day. If you’re on a yarn budget, be cautious about subscribing! However, if you’re looking for a deal, keeping an eye on their emails can lead to great finds, especially when they offer discounted or flat-rate shipping promotions.

How I Modified A Hexagon Cardi for Mid & Plus Size

Hexagon Cardigan Modifications Hey yarn lovers! If you're a midsize or plus-size crocheter looking for ways to customize your hexagon cardigan for a more flattering and comfortable fit, I’ve got some great tips for you. I recently finished my second hexagon cardi and made a few modifications that helped me feel more confident wearing it. Here’s what I learned! The Inspiration Behind My Second Hexagon Cardi A while back, I made a basic hexagon cardigan using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. While I loved the pattern and even won a blue ribbon at my county fair, I wasn’t sure I would actually wear it. It felt a bit too boxy and oversized for my liking. This time, I decided to use Herrschners Witches Brew yarn for a fun Halloween-inspired version. Get the yarn HERE . Since I wanted to ensure I would love wearing it, I made a few tweaks to improve the fit and feel. Key Modifications for a Better Fit 1. Adjusting the Shoulder Fit Instead of making the panels overly large, I measured my sho...

All The Details On This Popular Crochet Border

Perfect Border for Your Blanket Recently, one of my older YouTube Shorts started gaining a lot of attention. It featured a beautiful crochet border, but I didn’t go into much detail about it in the short. Since many viewers found it through searches for crochet borders, I wanted to take a moment to discuss it in more depth. The Inspiration Behind the Border The border I used in that video comes from the YouTube channel Hectanooga1, created by Emmy. She demonstrated the border on a small square, but I adapted it for my blanket. One key difference between my version and hers is that I used it on fleece rather than a crocheted piece. To prepare the fleece, I used a rotary cutter with a skip blade to create holes along the edge. Then, I worked a foundation row with Red Heart Super Saver yarn before adding the decorative border. If you want to use this border on a non-fleece blanket, you can simply crochet a round of double crochets before starting the decorative edge. My Favorite Bla...
