Ombre Shell in the Round Blanket: A Quick, Easy & Beautiful Make

Ombre Shells

If you’re looking for a quick, easy, and visually stunning crochet project, the Ombre Shell in the Round Blanket might be your new favorite. This project has all the soothing rhythm of a granny square with an extra elegant twist thanks to the ombre effect—and it’s beginner-friendly to boot!

Why I Love This Blanket

This blanket was such a joy to make. I used Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Deep Teal, and I was amazed at how effortlessly the colors shifted across the project. It created this dreamy gradient that made the shell stitch pattern really shine.

This pattern is based on a technique I learned from Play Hooky With Me on YouTube. I’ll link her tutorial video below—she’s using multiple colors, but the ombre yarn simplifies the process beautifully. It takes the guesswork out of color changes so you can just relax and enjoy crocheting.

Pattern Overview

This blanket is constructed using a technique called Shell in the Round, which builds out from a center point, similar to a granny square. The largest chain count you'll use is five chains, and your shells are simply groups of seven double crochets. This pattern is only a two row repeat. It’s repetitive in the best way—easy to memorize and ideal for zoning out while watching TV or listening to a podcast.

A Note on Mistakes (and Why They’re Totally Okay)

Like most of my projects, this one has a few tiny flaws—but you know what? You can't even find them unless you're really hunting. I missed a couple of joins in the corners where two chain spaces should’ve met to form a “V” for my next shell. When that happened, I just made the shell in the nearest chain space, and honestly, you’d never know. It’s a good reminder that crochet doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

Why This Makes a Great Gift

This blanket is destined to be a gift, and one reason I chose Red Heart Super Saver Ombre is because it's incredibly durable. It can go straight into the washing machine (I recommend laying flat to dry), so it’s practical and pretty. That’s a win-win for handmade gifting!

Final Thoughts

If you’re ready to try something a little different but still relaxing and meditative, this Shell in the Round Ombre Blanket is a great choice. It’s beautiful, beginner-friendly, and easy to customize in any color to match your vibe or decor.

So grab your yarn, find a comfy spot, and give this pattern a try. I’d love to see what you create!

How I Modified A Hexagon Cardi for Mid & Plus Size

Hexagon Cardigan Modifications Hey yarn lovers! If you're a midsize or plus-size crocheter looking for ways to customize your hexagon cardigan for a more flattering and comfortable fit, I’ve got some great tips for you. I recently finished my second hexagon cardi and made a few modifications that helped me feel more confident wearing it. Here’s what I learned! The Inspiration Behind My Second Hexagon Cardi A while back, I made a basic hexagon cardigan using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. While I loved the pattern and even won a blue ribbon at my county fair, I wasn’t sure I would actually wear it. It felt a bit too boxy and oversized for my liking. This time, I decided to use Herrschners Witches Brew yarn for a fun Halloween-inspired version. Get the yarn HERE . Since I wanted to ensure I would love wearing it, I made a few tweaks to improve the fit and feel. Key Modifications for a Better Fit 1. Adjusting the Shoulder Fit Instead of making the panels overly large, I measured my sho...

All The Details On This Popular Crochet Border

Perfect Border for Your Blanket Recently, one of my older YouTube Shorts started gaining a lot of attention. It featured a beautiful crochet border, but I didn’t go into much detail about it in the short. Since many viewers found it through searches for crochet borders, I wanted to take a moment to discuss it in more depth. The Inspiration Behind the Border The border I used in that video comes from the YouTube channel Hectanooga1, created by Emmy. She demonstrated the border on a small square, but I adapted it for my blanket. One key difference between my version and hers is that I used it on fleece rather than a crocheted piece. To prepare the fleece, I used a rotary cutter with a skip blade to create holes along the edge. Then, I worked a foundation row with Red Heart Super Saver yarn before adding the decorative border. If you want to use this border on a non-fleece blanket, you can simply crochet a round of double crochets before starting the decorative edge. My Favorite Bla...
