Summer Yarn Stash Check-In: What to Keep, What to Use, and What to Donate Before Fall

Labor Day is often seen as the end of summer, and for yarn lovers, it’s also the perfect time to check in on your stash before the busy fall season begins. Cooler weather usually means bigger projects, cozier fibers, and longer stretches of crochet time, so why not give your yarn collection a little refresh before diving in?

Step 1: Sort Through Your Summer-Friendly Yarns

Cotton, linen, bamboo, and lightweight blends are perfect for warm weather projects, but as the seasons shift, you may not reach for them as often. Take a look at your stash and set these yarns aside. Then ask yourself:

  • Do I want to use them now?

  • Should I store them for next year?

  • Could I donate or gift them to someone who will use them sooner?

Step 2: Revisit Your WIPs (Works in Progress)

Do you have a summer top that’s still only half done? Or a bag project that got left in a project basket? Decide whether it’s worth finishing now or whether it’s time to frog and reclaim the yarn for something you’ll actually make and enjoy.

Step 3: Get Inspired to Use It Up

If you have leftover skeins or partial balls of cotton, they’re perfect for small, quick projects like dishcloths, coasters, or scrunchies. These make great stash-busters and can be finished in a single sitting.

Step 4: Donate What Doesn’t Spark Joy

Labor Day is also about honoring work, and your work as a maker matters! If you’ve been holding onto yarn you know you’ll never use, pass it along to a local school, senior center, or charity. Someone else’s creativity might be waiting for that exact skein.

Looking Ahead: Quick Weekend Projects

Once you’ve sorted your stash and rediscovered those lighter yarns, why not use Labor Day weekend to whip up a project you can finish fast? From dishcloths to hair accessories, there are plenty of weekend-friendly projects that will give you the satisfaction of finishing something before the holiday is over.

How I Modified A Hexagon Cardi for Mid & Plus Size

Hexagon Cardigan Modifications Hey yarn lovers! I recently finished my second hexagon cardi and made a few modifications that helped me feel more confident wearing it. Here’s what I learned! The Inspiration Behind My Second Hexagon Cardi A while back, I made a basic hexagon cardigan using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. While I loved the pattern and even won a blue ribbon at my county fair, I wasn’t sure I would actually wear it. It felt a bit too boxy and oversized for my liking. This time, I decided to use Herrschners Witches Brew yarn for a fun Halloween-inspired version. Get the yarn HERE . Since I wanted to ensure I would love wearing it, I made a few tweaks to improve the fit and feel. Key Modifications for a Better Fit 1. Adjusting the Shoulder Fit Instead of making the panels overly large, I measured my sho...
