Hello yarny friends! It feels so good to be back after my longest break from YouTube so far. If you missed it, I’ve spent the last few weeks recovering from a hysterectomy and while it’s been quite an experience, I’m so thankful to be on the mend and sitting down to catch up with you today.
Three Weeks Post-Surgery
By the time you’re reading this, it’s been exactly three weeks since my surgery. Everything went well, with no complications, and my first post-op checkup looked great. I still have another follow-up scheduled at the six-week mark, but overall, I’m feeling relieved and grateful.
For months leading up to the surgery, I had been dealing with fibroids and recurring polyps that were just causing too much discomfort. At 49, it felt like the right time to move on from all of that and focus on feeling better.
The difference now is incredible. I no longer feel like I’m carrying a giant, hard grapefruit inside me (which is exactly how it felt before). There’s still some lingering fatigue, and I’m taking it slow, but every day gets a little easier.
And honestly, I can’t imagine going through this with little kids at home. Hearing from people who managed recovery while parenting full-time has made me extra appreciative that it’s just my husband, me, our cat, and our dog right now. Hats off to all of you amazing multitasking moms out there!
Healing… One Stitch at a Time
Crochet has been my best companion during recovery. Those first few days post-surgery, I mostly rested and followed the doctor’s advice to walk a little each day. But once I had some energy back, my crochet hook was right there waiting for me.
Before surgery, my daughter came over and picked out some yarns she liked, so I had a little “recovery project pile” ready to go. And I actually got quite a bit done! Here’s a peek at what came off my hook over the past few weeks:
Premier Cotton Collage + Big Twist Little Bunny Beanie
This one was for my daughter, I combined two different yarns to give it a soft, squishy texture. The Cotton Collage adds some stretch, while the fluffy acrylic tones down the colors beautifully. I just need to sew up the top and add a cute tan pom pom!
Big Twist Party Infinity Scarf
Also one my daughter picked out. It’s brighter than what I usually wear, but the striped yarn worked perfectly with a geometric stitch pattern. Just a few ends to weave in, and it’s ready to go.
Hobbie Silly Socks “Lion Tamer” Infinity Scarf
This one I made for myself using two skeins of Silly Socks yarn. The colors remind me of 1970s home dĂ©cor: warm, retro, and cozy. It’s a simple corner-to-corner (C2C) scarf that I turned into an infinity loop, and I love it.
Haiku Bamboo & Cotton Scarf
This was a gifted yarn in a soft lilac shade. It worked up beautifully into another corner-to-corner infinity scarf, this time with a smooth, drapey texture thanks to the bamboo. I think this one will go to my daughter too! It's funny because I forgot I made this one!!!! Those must have been some good post-surgery meds I was taking!!!
Hobbie “Autumn” Virus Shawl + Sock Yarn Beanie
My favorite combo! I made a virus shawl and a matching beanie out of this yarn, and the colors are pure fall perfection. Sock yarn takes a bit longer to work with, but the stretch and softness are worth every minute.
What’s Next
Now that I’m feeling a little stronger, I’m easing back into filming. I might even have another new videos coming out today if my energy holds up!
I’d love to hear your thoughts: would you like a tutorial for the corner-to-corner infinity scarf?
Let me know in the comments below or on YouTube.
Thank you all again for your kindness, patience, and encouragement while I’ve been healing. You’ve truly helped me feel connected and supported even during a quiet season. đź’›
Until next time: happy stitching, and thank you for talking yarn with me! It's so good to be back!
