Have you ever looked at a crochet piece and thought, That just screams boho!? There’s something about the combination of flowy shapes, handmade textures, and layered looks that makes crochet and boho style a perfect match. And in today’s post, I want to explore exactly why that is. Plus share my current obsession: a virus stitch shawl using YarnArt Flowers Moonlight. Spoiler alert: it’s giving Stevie Nicks on a beach at sunset and I’m here for it.
What Is Boho Style, Really?
When people say “boho,” they’re often thinking about the 1960s and '70s. A time when fashion got a little freer, flowier, and funkier. But for me, boho isn’t just a look, it’s a feeling. It’s about comfort, confidence, self-expression, and a little bit of rebellion. Think fringe, natural fibers, earthy colors, lace textures, and anything that feels just a little bit dreamy and worn-in.
As a fiber artist, I see crochet as one of the ultimate tools for channeling that aesthetic. It’s handmade, it’s personal, and it allows you to create shapes and textures that feel one-of-a-kind.
Let’s Talk About the Virus Stitch
I’ve been playing with some variations of the virus stitch lately and dreaming up different uses:
-
A bandana-style headwrap
-
A festival-style poncho
-
Even a wall hanging that combines the stitch with tassels or fringe
It’s the kind of pattern that lets you get creative, whether you're going full Stevie Nicks or just adding a little boho flair to your everyday style.
Yarn I'm Loving Right Now
My current shawl project is made with YarnArt Flowers Moonlight in color 3284—a warm blend of orange, burgundy, and gold with a bit of shimmer. It’s soft, it’s light, and it’s got just enough sparkle to feel special without being overwhelming.
I originally bought the yarn in THIS VIDEO, (or read about it HERE) and I’ve been saving it for just the right project. The virus stitch really lets the slow color changes shine!
Want to Try It Yourself?
If you’re new to the virus stitch, don’t worry—I’ve got a quick tutorial in my LATEST VIDEO. I walk you through the beginning steps so you can get started without feeling overwhelmed.
And trust me, once you get going, it’s the kind of pattern that feels so satisfying.
Something Exciting Is Coming…
This video is also the official soft launch of something I’ve been working hard on behind the scenes: my very first free quarterly digital magazine!
It’ll be packed with boho crochet inspiration, patterns, interviews, and fiber artist features. If you’re into this whole vibe—yarn, creativity, handmade fashion, and fiber joy—I’d love for you to join the waitlist.
Let’s Keep the Boho Love Going
I’d love to hear from you! What does boho style mean to you? Do you love the virus stitch as much as I do? Leave a comment or tag me in your projects—especially if you’re playing with this style too.
Thanks for being here, for embracing the boho heart, and for supporting my work as a fiber artist and creator. đź’›
