Let’s take a cozy little trip back in time: autumn, 2023
That was the year I teamed up with my sweet friend Jessie from Sweet Moments by Jessie to create one of the most whimsical, silly, joy-sparking crochet projects I’ve ever made… my beloved Pumpkin Pie Purse. And every November, and only November, she makes her grand appearance again.
Yes, we are talking about a purse shaped like a slice of pumpkin pie. And yes… it has a massive dollop of whipped cream on top. Because accuracy matters.
Every time I wear it out to run errands in November, people smile. Strangers stop to ask about it. Yarn lovers ask if I crocheted it. And truly, how can anyone look at crocheted dessert and not grin?
The Project: A Silly, Sweet Slice of Fall
This purse is easy, fun, and festive. A perfect Thanksgiving-season make that mixes crochet with pure joy.
The construction is simple:
-
Front post double crochet in the round to create the “pie slices”
-
Bobble stitches for that flaky-pie-crust texture
-
Single and double crochet whipped cream magic
-
Two panels joined together
-
Add a strap + D-rings, and you’re ready for pie-to-go
I used scrap acrylic yarn (I think Lion Brand Pound of Love), and honestly? This is a great stash-buster. Especially for those scratchy budget acrylic yarns we all have but will not name.
Tip: If I made it again, I’d size down my hook to about 4.5mm instead of 5.5mm so the bag has a little more structure.
Tutorial Help From Jessie
If you don’t already know Jessie, she is fantastic at tutorials. When I first tackled this, I knew explaining a front post double crochet increase pattern wasn’t my strong suit, so I called in backup.
Jessie not only understood my chaotic attempt at instructions… she turned it into a clear, polished, easy-to-follow tutorial that now has over 4,500 views (compared to my original video’s 1,000-ish 😂).
That tells you everything you need to know: if you want to learn the stitch technique for this purse, go watch her video!

Jessie’s tutorial: detailed stitch instruction & increases
I strongly suggest watching Jessie's tutorial but if you're adventurous, here's the written instructions:
Use 3 colors of budget 4 weight yarn for this seasonal bag Start with a magic ring, chain 3, then add 9 double crochets. (The next 8 rounds are all increase rounds) Round 2: Chain 1, make a FPDC around the first post, then make 2 FPDC’s over the next post. That starts the ridges forming. Do this all the way around. Round 2 will have 20 stitches. Round 3: ch 1, FPDC around the first post, second post, then make your increase by making 2 FPDC’s around the third post. This round will have 30 stitches. Continue in the manner for 9 rounds in total, each round increasing by 10 stitches. For a total of 90 stitches. Row 10: 90 SC Row 11: CH 1, SC, bobble, continue alternating around, you should have 45 bobbles in total. Make 2 of these panels SC panels together, with wrong sides out, so the seem is inside
Finishing Touches & Custom Ideas
A few optional extras:
-
Line the bag with felt (I didn’t, because I use it 2–3 times a year)
-
Add a clasp if you'd like closure
-
Crochet a strap or thrift one (my favorite hack!)
-
Make smaller whipped cream dollops instead of one giant one… but why would you?
And the best part? You can use this technique to make any flavor of pie purse. Lemon meringue, key lime, chocolate silk… go wild. No judgement here.... Unless, you pick Sour Cream Raisin Pie.
Why This Project Means So Much
Thanksgiving has always been special to me. Filled with family, laughter, my grandma’s cooking (Read all about her in THIS POST or watch THIS VIDEO), and memories that still warm my heart. Now, my husband, daughter, and I host our own dinner each year and carry those traditions forward.
So yes… this bag is silly and seasonal and a little over the top.
But it’s also nostalgic, cozy, and handmade joy.
And that’s what crochet is for me: creativity, comfort, and connection. Read about all my Fall Favorites HERE or check out the Fall Favorite Livestream HERE.
