I am so excited to finally share my new yarn room with you! A couple of videos ago, I called it my “official studio,” and today you’ll get the full tour.
This transformation started when my husband and I realized that our guest room was mostly sitting unused. We only have guests a couple of times a year, but I film in here a lot. So, we decided to take out the bed and turn the space into a dedicated creative studio for Shannon Talks Yarn.
And by “we,” I mean my husband did about 99% of the work while I stood around saying things like, “Yeah, that should go there.” He’s such a good sport!
Starting Fresh
Before setting up my lighting and filming equipment, I walked through the room to admire the changes. We kept most of the furniture thrifted or “shopped from home,” but I added a few special new pieces that I’ll link in my Amazon storefront for anyone interested.
One of the first things I brought in was a thick tufted wool rug my daughter didn’t want anymore. It adds warmth, texture (and bonus!) it helps with sound while filming. I also love little whimsical touches, like a thrifted light switch cover, because small details make a space feel personal.
A curtain now hides the closet, which instantly reduced visual clutter. My Bobble and Puff organizers are packed to the brim with yarn, dyeing supplies, and some spinning gear, but they’re holding up beautifully without bulging. Read all about them HERE!
Thrifted Treasures & Hidden Storage
Over the years, I’ve collected plenty of secondhand finds, from vintage crochet books in a wicker basket to a 1940s waterfall-style dresser. On top of the dresser, I’ve styled a thrifted bamboo magazine holder filled with yarn, a decorative clock, and a quirky white pheasant figurine.
Other finds include wall sconces (just $1 for the pair!) that will eventually hold colorful taper candles, strictly for decoration, not lighting. I also keep extra tripods, lamps, and filming accessories tucked away so the room stays functional without feeling crowded.A Yarn Display With Intention
A wicker stand from my husband’s aunt now holds yarns I plan to use first, projects purchased with intention rather than impulse. These are the skeins that inspire me every time I walk into the room.
Nearby, a plant stand with a fake plant adds a little greenery without any watering responsibilities (and yes, I probably thrifted that too). A few softbox lights were my big functional upgrade, perfect for creating a more professional filming setup.
The Star of the Show: My New Desk
The only brand-new furniture in the room is my electric height-adjustable desk. My old desk looked pretty, but I couldn’t even fit my legs under it comfortably. This one lets me sit or stand while filming tutorials, and it’s already made such a difference.
On the desk, I keep paper, pencils, an amber glass dish (because I can’t resist amber glass), and an overhead phone mount for filming. Built-in outlets make it easy to plug in my lamp, microphone, or laptop.
The desk even has the perfect nook for my sewing machine, with a drawer below for sewing supplies.
More shelves store my sewing books, crochet books and because I can’t resist, a tiny wicker chair full of yarn.
The Little Details That Make Me Smile
Amber glass pieces, vintage clocks, needlepoint art, and tiny chairs with yarn on them give the space character. I’ve also kept my notions organized in a lidded box and my jewelry-making supplies in labeled containers. Even my yarn swift and ball winder now have a proper home, ready to clamp to the desk when needed.
Almost everything else is thrifted, repurposed, or found around the house. My philosophy has always been: if I love it and it works, it belongs here.
A Creative Space That Feels Like Home
This yarn room feels intentional, cozy, and truly mine. I’m grateful to my husband for all his help, from assembling the desk (a four-hour project, even for a handy guy) to researching microphones and lighting. Even though he’s not interested in crochet himself, he’s been incredibly supportive.
If you have a craft room, I’d love to know-what’s your must-have item? Is there anything you think I’m missing?
Until next time, I’m going to enjoy this space, get some crocheting done, and maybe (just maybe) admire my yarn for a little while.

Most of my other finds are thrifted, so they’re truly one-of-a-kind treasures.
