Labor Day weekend is often thought of as the unofficial end of summer. It's a time for barbecues, sales, and maybe a little relaxation. But if you’re like me, it’s also the perfect opportunity to reclaim your yarn space before fall projects kick into high gear. You don’t need a full makeover to feel more organized! (click HERE if you're interested in my latest yarn room makeover!) Even a few hours of tidying can make your yarn room (or yarn corner!) feel fresh, inviting, and ready for your next WIP.
Here are some quick and doable ways to organize your yarn room this holiday weekend:
1. Do a 10-Minute Surface Sweep
Clear off any flat surfaces: desks, tables, or cube tops that have become landing zones for skeins, hooks, or half-finished projects. Even stacking things into a basket temporarily will make the space feel calmer and give you room to breathe.
2. Gather Your WIPs in One Spot
If your yarn room is anything like mine, projects in progress can end up scattered everywhere. Take a few minutes to collect them into one container, bin, or shelf. Bonus: this gives you a chance to re-prioritize which ones you’ll finish this fall.
3. Sort by “Love It or Leave It”
Pull out any yarn that you know you won’t use (wrong color, wrong fiber, just not inspiring anymore). Set it aside for donation, swaps, or gifting. You’ll free up valuable space and make your stash feel more curated.
4. Label a Few Bins
If you’ve been meaning to label your yarn bins or baskets, this is a quick win! Even sticky notes or painter’s tape can work in the short term. Having visible categories (like “Cotton,” “Wool Blends,” or “Bulky Weight”) saves time when you’re hunting for that perfect skein. 5. Make a Yarn “To-Do” List
Sometimes organizing isn’t just about the physical stuff. It’s also about your mental load. Take five minutes to jot down a list: projects to frog, supplies to restock, or future storage upgrades you’d like to make. Having a plan keeps the clutter from sneaking back.
6. End with a Cozy Touch
Once you’ve tidied, add a finishing detail that makes your yarn room feel welcoming again. Light a fall-scented candle, hang up a new print, or drape a finished crochet piece on your chair. A little touch of joy will make your yarn room a place you want to spend time in. Need some inspo? Check out THIS POST where I create a cozy crochet nook!
This Labor Day weekend, give yourself the gift of a refreshed yarn space. Even small organizing wins can spark big creative energy. And with cooler weather (and crochet season!) just around the corner, you’ll be ready to dive into all the cozy projects your heart desires
